WASPS #4: What shall I feed my pet mantis?

WASPS banner image“Papa, what does a praying mantis eat?” Such was the question of our three-year-old tot as he was bringing in a jar with his new pet that was caught by the nanny in the yard.

“Feed it with a grasshopper”, was his mom’s quick answer as the three of us were looking at a small mantis (Mantodea) and lots of blades of grass that we presumed were intended as its food.

“No!  He cannot eat grasshopper!” We immediately sensed that he was upset.  We realized that the reaction still had to do with the pet slant-faced grasshopper that died days before because he (and his nanny) forgot to feed it with grass for a few days.

We had to explain further and later showed this National Geographic video:

The video helped us explain that his new pet is a carnivore, while the earlier ones were all herbivores, including the grasshopper. We elaborated to the older kids that praying mantises are also sometimes called “preying mantis” because of their predatory nature. The story went further up the trophic level when the chameleon stealthily showed up towards the end of the video to eat the camouflaged mantis to everyone’s surprise.

As for CLIENTS only pages in this site, there’s one new page about the follow through of Habits 2 and 3.  I realized that the Teachable Point of View slides in pdf that was posted a couple of weeks ago inadvertently became inaccessible, so even existing clients were not able to see the page.  I apologize for the oversight.  Please check it out prior to our next meeting.

Don’t forget to share your updates, social or otherwise, by email to admin[at]insectexperts.com or by posting it on our Facebook wall.

That’s our week that WASPS ;)

Share and Enjoy
